Saul Bellow in Humboldt Park

Submitted by Kathleen Bloch

Though his earliest years were spent in Montreal, Saul Bellow moved with his family to Chicago at the age of nine. Having lived in a series of apartments in the Humboldt Park neighborhood, he graduated from Tuley High School at 1313 North Claremont Avenue in 1933.

Young Saul was an enthusiastic and notable participant in the intense literary activity and radical politics for which Tuley was then known. Later, Chicago formed the background of many of Bellow’s novels and often, as in The Adventures of Augie March, his characters were drawn from friends and neighborhood personalities.
